Greetings! Here's an extra small puzzle for you! It's down below the meta explanation.

In three answers, an 8-letter word is sliced in half into two 4-letter words by a black square. GALL + EGOS = GALLEGOS. ALLE + GORY = ALLEGORY. DELE + GATE = DELEGATE. Each of the words contains LEG, which is broken off by the square, hence BREAK A LEG, a phrase associated with luck. Additionally, the title COMPOUND FRACTURE alludes to the compounding of the 4-letter words, the fracturing of the 8-letter word, and also... actually breaking your leg.
